The stone-laying ceremony
"The parishioners of St Michael's, Wood Green, have new gone a long way towards the acquisition of a parish hall that will do credit to their parish. It was not much over twelve months age that the building fund was opened, and the decision arrived at to build a hall at some future date. The actual erection of the hall has new been in progress for some weeks, and it had proceeded far for the stone-laying ceremony to take place last Saturday afternoon. The function was a brilliant one, and was very largely attended. The new hall will stand between 'the Vicarage and the schools, and will be a handsome and spacious structure of a very similar character to than already built at St. Michael -at-Bowes and St John's, Palmers Green. The plans have been drawn up by the same architect - namely. Mr. J. S. Alder. Saturday's ceremony was conducted by the Rev. Denton Jones, Vicar of Tottenham and Patron of the living of St. Michael's. The Rev. C. G. A. Midwinter (Vicar) took a good part of the service, and other clergy is attendance were the Revs. C. G. P. Keogh and 0. W. Warmington (Curates). H. Seymour Isaacs, J. T. T. Robinson, Principal Thomas, and H. Searle. The Rev. S.B. Rees was also among the spectators, bit he did not wear his surplice. The choir and the clergy put on their cassocks and surplices in the schoolroom and walked in procession, together with the two churchwardens. to the scene of this ceremony singing the well-known hymn. "The Church's one Foundation." ... The Rev. Denton Jones afterwards prayed for God's blessing on the new hall, whilst he rested his hand upon the stone. This was followed by the laying of the stone for which purpose he was presented with a silver towel. Under the stone was placed a copy of last week's "Weekly Herald" and a number of George V coins. The stone-laying was followed by more prayers and the hymns "All in the name of Jesus" and "Now thank we all our God". During the former there was a collection on behalf of the building fund, and whilst the latter was being sung, the clergy and choir returned to the schoolroom. The ceremony over, several of the parishioners proceeded to the schoolroom for tea. It should be mentioned that the local troop of Boy Scouts formed a smart guard of honour at the arrival of the clergy on the dais where the ceremony was performed." -
