The stone-laying ceremony
"The laying of the foundation stone, last Saturday afternoon, a new Moravian Church (Protestant Episcopal Free Church) in Priory road, Hornsey. marked anew departure, or forward movement, in connection with that historic community. Hitherto there has been only one such church in London (Fetter-lane), the activities of the body, so far this country is concerned, having been mainly devoted foreign missionary work, but it is now about to enter upon work of church extension, and take more active part in religious and social movements at home. The new church when completed will handsome structure. Its cost, including the excellent site, will be £5,000, £4,000 of which has been raised loan, and a commencement has been made in raising the other £1,000 bv subscription. The architects are Messrs W D Church of Son, of Finsbury, whose design was selected in competition, and the builders are M K. Tinson & Son, of Kensington. The seating accommodation will for about 400. The Rev. H.P. Mumford. the minister of the new church, presided at Saturday’s proceedings, and read some most cordial letters of good wishes for the new undertaking from the Right Hon. McKenna. M P (Minister of Education), who was educated at a Moravian school, the Earl of Ronaldshay, M.P., the rector of Hornsey (the Rev N. Thicknesse), the Rev Dr. Alfred Rowland, and others. Mr Mumford emphasized the fact that the new church is not being erected in any sectarian spirit. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. Brackenhury, chairman the Hornsev Education Committee, who was Mayor of the Borough in 1905-6. The dedicatory prayer was offered by Bishop Hasse and others taking part in the proceedings included the Bev. H.F.. England, the Rev J. Klessel. Mr H. "Evelyn Renatus Hasse (June 11, 1855-May 28, 1915), born at Ockbrook, Derby, England, United Kingdom, was a son of the Reverend Alexander Cossart Hasse (December 30, 1813-December 12, 1894) and Marie Elisabeth Gottiebe von Bulow (January 4, 1824-1861). Thus Evelyn was a grandson of Christian Friedrich Hasse (1771-May 1, 1831), a German-English Moravian composer and educator. In March 1884 the hymn writer and translator married Mary Emma Nelson (died in 1913). He, a minister, helped to found a school (at Bristol) for foreign missions, became a bishop in 1904, began to serve as a provincial elder two years later, and worked on The Liturgy and Canticles (1914) of the Moravian Church in Great Britain and Ireland. Henry Plevy Mumford was "born in Antigua, West Indies, on July 26th, 1862, the son of missionary, deceased was educated at Fulneck; the Moravian College. Fairfield, Manchester; and New College, Edinburgh. He became master at Gracehill, Fulneck, and Neuwied-on-the-Rhme. Ordained in 1891, he was Minister at Brockweir-on-the-Wye from 1892-1895, at Belfast from 1895 to 1906, and Fetter-lane and Hornsey and Upton Manor, from 1906 to 1918. He began the Moravian Missions Magazine in 1902. From 1918 to 1929 in which year he retired, he was Minister of Baildon Moravian Church. Yorkshire. He was editor of the Moravian Messenger from 1900 to 1916. He married, in 1895, Ethel Poskett and there were three sons and two daughters. His eldest son fell Arras in 1917. During his tenure at Hornsey Moravian Church, he lived, with his family, at 58 Onslow Gardens, Muswell Hill.

The architects
The senior partner in the firm of Church & Son, William Daniel Church was an architect well-known on Non-conformist circles. W.D. Church and his practice were responsible for the design of a number of Congregational churches in the London area, at Harringay (Allison Road/Green Lanes), East Dulwich, New Malden, Church End (Finchley) and West Finchley, as well as the extension to the Congregational Memorial Hall, Farringdon Road. W.D. Church died at his home in Stoke Newington in 1906.
